Louis Olsen George Melrose was a Sapper & Miner with the Royal Engineers.George MELROSE and Jane SCHOFIELD sailed from Plymouth, UK on 9 August 1852 and after being at sea for 122 days arrived in Tasmania, Australia on 9 December 1852. George was a Sapper & Miner of the Royal Engineers. Later the family moved to Sydney and George became a licensed Surveyor. THE LEAHY FAMILY…From what I have established so far the Leahy’s and Manl(e)y’s appear to have immigrated to South Australia from Ireland. Cornelius and Margaret were married 3 Oct 1858 at Mt Barker, South Australia, his father was Denis Leahy and her father was Edward Manely. At some stage following their marriage they travelled through Victoria to the Wilcannia area in NSW were Cornelius worked as a horse breaker and teamster, I believe for the Cobb & Co Coach Company. James Pinkerton from Derry, Ire & Mary Ann Pollock from Leckpatrick, Co. Tyrone, Ire arrived on the New York Packet In 1841 there were three people onboard the ‘New York Packet’ which sailed into Sydney that would play a part in the Pinkerton Lineage. They were James PINKERTON, aged 23, a native of Derry, Ireland, Mary Ann POLLOCK, aged 21, and her younger sister Margaret POLLOCK, aged 18 both from Leckpatrick, Co. Tyrone, Ireland. Continue reading “James Pinkerton & Mary Ann Pollock” » Now, do I call this one Hodges, Bray or Leahy? That is the big question! Here is some background and hopefully if you are connected to this branch you can help me fill in some blanks. Louisa Bray, the daughter of John & Maria BRAY was christened 4 August 1861 at St Blazey, Cornwall. When the BRAY’S came to Australia is not known at this time, however I have narrowed it down to between 1861 and 1877, although her death certificate states she had been in the colonies for 72 years which makes her about 4 when she arrived. From Louisa’s marriage to John HODGES in 1878 at Wilcannia, NSW we know that her father ‘William John BRAY’ was deceased and that her step-father Henry POCKRANDT gave his permission for her to be married, her mother’s name was not listed. During 1996 I heard about the ‘Gold Coast & Albert Genealogical Society’ and thought to myself ‘that would be worth joining’! Well boy was it ever, it opened up a gold mine for us. No more dabbling at the family research, I hit it with gusto and then my mother Peggy jumped on the band wagon, she turned out to be worse than me!! AND that is saying something. Thomas Friend & Mary Piper (also Caroline Miller [?Kelly] & Elizabeth Rose Loseby A Little Background HistoryThis here is my sons paternal family of which I have not done a lot of research, as yet!
